Welcome to Troop 391
|
Boy Scout Troop 391 has a long and proud history of serving families
with scouting age boys in the Polaris District of the Milwaukee County
Council-Boy Scouts of America. The Troop has been continuously chartered in the
Fox Point-Bayside area since the late 50's. The Fox Point-Bayside School Parent
Teacher Organization (PTO) is the chartered organization. Troop 391 focuses on
Scouting advancement and outdoor skill development with an emphasis on having
fun. Troop 391 is proud to have developed more than 80 Eagle Scouts. Cub Scout
Pack 391 is also well established in the community and provides opportunities
for second year Webelos Dens to participate in various Troop activities.
The Troop meets weekly year around on
Monday evenings at 6:45-8:00 PM at the Longacre Pavilion (Longacre Road at
Bell Road) near Stormonth School.
During a typical year, Scouts participate in approximately 12 weekend
activities which can include tent and cabin camping, a Father/Son overnight,
hikes, bicycling, pool swimming, sporting events, horseback riding and winter
camping with skiing and ice fishing. Each year in August, Scouts attend Lefeber
Northwoods Camp in Northern Wisconsin for a week of wilderness type camping
which includes 6 nights in tents, cooking all meals over fire, swimming,
sailing, rafting, fishing, overnight canoe trip to island, earning merit badges
and rank advancement. The Troop has attended National and International
Jamborees, taken expeditions to Philmont Scout Ranch located in New Mexico,
travelled to Scandinavian Countries, the United Kingdom and Russia. Community
service activities include acting as color guard for local parades, the annual
"Scouting For Food" campaign and other opportunities to help local
schools, Cub Scout Packs and charitable organizations .
Scouts begin their advancement immediately upon entering the Troop
through participation in the various activities. Individual Scouts are
organized into groups called Patrols, typically by age or school grade, working
together utilizing the Patrol Method. Scouts advance individually from Tenderfoot
rank through Eagle Scout. Efforts are made to have the Scout achieve the rank
of First Class in their first year. A few merit badges are worked on in groups
as well as elected Merit Badge Clinics sponsored by the Council. Courts of
Honor are held periodically, typically organizeda around a family potluck
dinner or picnic, to recognize Scouts for their achievements.
The official uniform for Troop 391 includes a long or short sleeve Boy
Scout shirt (open collar) with insignia which includes council patch, flag, and
red shoulder loops. 391 numerals, other insignia and advancement are provided
by the Troop. Scouts are required to wear their uniforms at all Troop meetings
as well as while travelling to and returning from Troop-sponsored activities.
